By now, the damage Typhoon Haiyan had dealt on my country is well known.

And we've got another tropical depression on the way.

Living in the north, my family and I were thankfully spared from the brunt of the storm.

But watching the news is so depressing.

It's so difficult to see my countrymen suffer, and there's only so much I can do, short of grabbing a flight and doing volunteer work.

I've donated clothes. I've donated money via UNICEF.

What else can I do?

What else can I do?

-----

I’ve heard so many comments from foreigners about how my countrymen can encounter so many challenges and still somehow find ways to smile.

The reality is, deep inside, we really hurt. We get envious, sad, and/or angry… we moan, and we complain, oh so much. But when you have no one you can rely on (least of all a central government that is about as trustworthy as a mafia), humor is about the only thing that keeps us moving on.

Sometimes my people’s often misplaced optimism frustrates me. Any silver lining that they can latch on, they hold on to with all their strength. The success of someone who has even just the smallest bit of Filipino blood in him. Being able to find the tiniest of humor in a dire situation that most other people won’t even dare make jokes about…

But when you have so many problems… sometimes seeing that silver lining is enough. It’s not the end of the world. There is still something to smile about. There is still something to laugh about, no matter how empty you feel.

We’re a population of stepford smilers.

And it’s heartbreaking.

I suppose there's something to be said about the seemingly persistent Filipino "stepford smiler" custom. If we DIDN'T have a bright side to consider, it'd be a very depressing life. Though I agree that the country also needs a more solid helping hand...
